Barn Owl Study was an independent graphite drawing made from a photo reference. I was not trying to force a larger story into it. My main goal was to study the reference carefully and make the owl look as accurate as I could. The wing was the hardest part because its texture depended on many overlapping feather layers without letting them turn into one flat pattern. I used short, layered pencil marks to separate the feathers while still keeping the wing connected as one form. This piece shows a different side of my drawing process than my more symbolic work because the focus is mainly on observation, patience, and translating a reference accurately.
