Ability without Direction came from artist's block, but the problem was not having no ideas. It was having too many and no clear way to make any of them real. I wanted the piece to feel split between control and chaos. I built the figure slowly with thousands of stippled Micron marks, then used India ink, watered-down ink, splattering, and heavy black shapes to make the space around it feel unstable. This was my first time using pen and ink on stretched canvas, so even the material felt uncertain. The piece later became a prop in my dance solo, Artist's Block. Carrying it into movement let the same pressure exist in the drawing, the object, and my body.
